Sensory Friendly Films -Autism Society

AMC Theaters have a unique new program where they run a special showing of a current movie in a “sensory friendly” fashion. The film is shown with the lights on, the sound turned down, and audience members are invited to get up and dance, walk, shout or sing!

This is supposed to be a set-up that is especially helpful for autistic individuals who may find a standard dark theater frightening. According to the AMC Theaters, “The idea for the program began with a request from a parent with an autistic child for a special screening at AMC Columbia Mall 14 in Columbia, MD. More than 300 children and parents attended the first screening.”

SInce then, they have rolled out the program of Autism friendly movies nationwide. All shows air at 10AM. Upcoming Sensory-Friendly showings* include:

  • April 10How to Train Your Dragon

  • June 26Toy Story 3
  • July 17Despicable Me
